About Ethnomusicology
Ethnomusicology is the study of music through a cultural lens. People who study ethnomusicology not only study music of world cultures but also study the societal context of the music. They research and observe the role that music plays in the culture of a country both past and present. The Society for Ethnomusicology believes that all ethnomusicologists share a foundation in the following methods:
1) Taking a global approach to music (regardless of area of origin, style, or genre).
2) Understanding music as social practice (viewing music as a human activity that is shaped by its cultural context).
3) Engaging in ethnographic fieldwork (participating in and observing the music being studied, frequently gaining facility in another music tradition as a performer or theorist), and historical research.

Elementary Ethnomusicology
It is hugely important that children begin to learn about other cultures and groups of people early in life. The elementary grades form a lasting foundation that will stay with a child throughout their entire school career. Many educators use music videos like Schoolhouse Rock to help teach subjects like addition, grammar, basic world history, and science. Music is a tool that has proven to be effective with young children, due to its ability to both grab and maintain their attention. Ethnomusicology is a relevant discipline to anyone, including elementary school students. It is not only a fun way to examine history and culture, but it is a perfect way to expand a student's mind past the tiny part of the world they are familiar with to exotic places and cultures.
